How contractors insurance can help protect your business

For contractors in construction, contractor insurance — especially liability insurance for contractors — is often required by law for licensing in most states. Working without adequate insurance coverage could result in fines, stop work orders or legal action.

Even if business insurance is not required, insufficient protection can leave your business vulnerable to high costs after an injury, an accident, theft, vandalism, fire, storm damage or other unfortunate events.

Many contractors prioritize these two types of coverage:

General Liability insurance for contractors

A general liability insurance policy could help cover medical costs and liability if a non-employee, such as a customer, vendor or passer-by, gets hurt at your worksite (called bodily injury in your policy). Contractors general liability insurance could also help if you or one of your employees damage property that doesn’t belong to you on a job, such as breaking a customer’s pipe during a remodel or tools that accidentally scratch a hardwood floor.** In some circumstances, this type of contractor liability insurance could provide financial help for medical payments, repair work, legal fees and judgments.

Workers’ Compensation insurance for contractors

Most states require workers’ comp if you have employees. This type of business insurance coverage could help cover medical bills and lost wages after employee injuries or illnesses on the job. Business owners also have the option to add workers’ comp for themselves.

How much does insurance cost

How much does contractor insurance cost?

The cost of business insurance can vary based on a number of factors, including:

  • The type of work that you do and your level of business risk.
  • Where your business is located.
  • Your number of employees.
  • Your annual business revenue.
  • Your claims history.

Get more business insurance coverage for contractors to cover more risk

In addition to contractor liability insurance and workers’ comp, other types of business insurance could help protect your business from more risk.
We typically recommend:
Commercial Auto insurance

If you own or use a vehicle for work, personal auto insurance typically won’t cover you. Most states require commercial auto insurance coverage for business-owned cars, trucks, trailers or other vehicles to help cover medical expenses and property damage after an accident.

Tool and Equipment insurance

If you frequently work at job sites in different locations, tools and equipment insurance could help provide financial protection for your work gear when you’re on the go. This type of business insurance coverage can be added to your general liability policy to help cover repair and replacement costs for all your gear, from allen keys to wrenches — and all the compressors in between.

Contractor’s Commercial Property insurance

If your business owns or rents a physical space, such as an office, a storage facility, a workshop or a warehouse, property insurance for contractors could help protect the structure and the contents inside, such as your equipment, inventory and furniture from covered events such as storm damage, fire, theft or vandalism. It could also help cover the costs around damage to some of the building systems in the background, such as HVAC heating and cooling or a burst water pipe.

Commercial property coverage could also help replace a portion of your business’s lost income if you have to close for repairs temporarily after a covered event.

Contractor’s Errors and Omissions insurance (Contractor’s E&O)

Contractor’s E&O could help protect you from the cost of workmanship errors, legal defense and legal judgments that result from your workmanship mistakes. For example, if you’re accused of installing the wrong cabinets for a client, contractors’ E&O could help cover expenses to fix the problem or defend your business if a client takes legal action against you.

Business Owner’s Policy (BOP insurance)

BOP insurance combines the coverage of both general liability and commercial property insurance into a single comprehensive package that’s often more affordable than buying two separate policies.

Employment Practices Liability insurance (EPLI)

Employment practices liability insurance (EPLI), an optional add-on to your general liability coverage, could help cover legal fees if you or someone at your business is accused of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) violations, sexual harassment, discrimination or wrongful termination.

How can I get a contractors insurance quote online?

It takes about 10 minutes to get a contractor insurance quote online with ERGO NEXT. We’ll ask a few questions about your business — like what you do, your location, how many people you employ and the vehicles you use for work. You’ll choose your options and see your price. If you like what you see, you can buy online and get unlimited access to sharable certificates of insurance (proof of insurance) at no extra cost.

How can a contractor get a certificate of insurance (COI)?

Once you have an ERGO NEXT policy, you’ll have access to your certificate of insurance (COI) 24/7 via web or app. Log in to your account and download your COI instantly or have it delivered via email or text. Get unlimited certificates and add an additional insured at no additional cost. Make changes to your coverage and your COI updates automatically.

I’m a jack-of-all-trades. Which policy will meet my insurance requirements?

If you do minor repairs or maintenance services, the ERGO NEXT handyman policy is limited to small jobs. It’s not a fit for work that might require a license, permit or inspection. If your operations scale larger, or if you have a specialty, we recommend selecting all of the types of tasks you perform. Or if you use subcontractors, take a look at our general contractor policy. Note that all of our business insurance policies require that you have the legally required licenses for the work you do in your state. Be sure to check your local rules to make sure you’re compliant.

If I’m a general contractor, does this insurance allow me to hire subcontractors?

Yes, you can hire subcontractors, and claims arising out of your subcontractor’s work can be covered under your ERGO NEXT insurance policy. If you’re using subcontractors for a job, ERGO NEXT requires your subcontractors to:

  • Have their own legally-required licenses.
  • Carry their own business insurance with limits equal to or greater than your own.
  • Name you as an additional insured on their policy.

It’s the general contractor’s responsibility to keep this documentation on file in case of a claim.

Will my policy include coverage for work that I don’t have a license for?

If your state requires a license to do a job, we do, too. However, in most states where insurance is a requirement to get your professional license, you can buy your policy before you get your license on the condition that you agree to have all required licenses in place before working. If you’re not operating your general contractor business legally, it’s likely that an insurance claim won’t be covered. If your state doesn’t require you to carry a license for a line of work, you are still welcome to apply for a policy.

How do I change the policy limits on my insurance?

To change or update your limits:

  1. Log in to your ERGO NEXT Insurance account.
  2. In your customer account, click the blue arrow to the right of the policy you'd like to update.
  3. Select the package that has the limits you want and click "Update plan".
  4. Read the statement, confirm that you’re in agreement and then click "Confirm update".

Your limit change will process immediately, and you'll have instant access to a certificate that reflects your updated limits.

In some cases, we may need to process your request manually. Please email us at support@nextinsurance.com and include a description of the limit change and the effective date of the change. The policy change may result in a one-time charge for the difference in premiums. If this is the case, the charge may be added to your next monthly payment. Once payment is processed, you will receive the insurance endorsement and confirmation of the one-time charge via email within seven to 10 business days.

Does ERGO NEXT Insurance cover independent contractors?

Your ERGO NEXT contractor insurance policy may cover independent contractors in some circumstances. If they’re workers performing jobs for your business, likely not. But depending on the state laws where you work, even if you think of your workers as independent contractors, they may actually be classified as employees and they could be covered under your policy.

If you’re a solo practitioner, ERGO NEXT can provide independent contractor liability insurance and more for the construction trade, including subcontractors. We could also cover office workers, creatives and professionals who work as self-employed freelancers, solopreneurs, and independent contractors. Even if you don’t work full-time, we have a policy that can fit your budget and help protect you from some of the costs of liability, legal action, repairs and injuries.

How can I get a quote for electrical contractor insurance?

Electrical contractor insurance could help protect working electricians from some financial liability if someone gets hurt on the job, the costs of accidental damages that you or your employees cause to someone else’s property, some work mistakes and some legal defense costs. And coverage may be a necessity to help you get your license, replace stolen tools or business gear, protect your work space and your employees, and to drive for work.

How can I get a quote for HVAC contractor insurance?

HVAC contractors insurance could help protect your business in many ways, and getting a quote takes about 10 minutes online.

Simply answer a few questions about things like the work that you do, where you do it and the size of your business. We’ll show you your exact price for coverage. If you like what you see, you can buy online — no agent required — and enjoy protections from some costs around work-related injuries and damages, stolen or damaged tools, some workmanship error costs, liability and more.
