General Liability

General Liability

Bought by 95% of business owners like you
General liability insurance covers a wide range of daycare accidents and basic risks. You’ll have financial protection if someone other than an employee gets hurt or you are held responsible for damaging property that doesn’t belong to you. It’s often required by state governments.

general liability can help you pay for:

Medical payments
Property damage
Legal fees and judgments
Professional Liability (E&O)

Professional Liability (E&O)

Bought by 80% of business owners like you
Professional liability insurance (also known as errors and omissions) helps you defend yourself if you’re accused of making a mistake that causes someone to lose money. For example, if you are accused of misplacing forms which list confidential health information about the children in your care, it could help cover related expenses to defend yourself.

professional liability can help you pay for:

Professional negligence (actual or alleged)
Legal defense costs
Legal judgments
Commercial Auto

Commercial Auto

For business owners who own or drive vehicles
Most states require commercial auto insurance for business-owned vehicles to help pay for medical expenses and property damage. Personal auto insurance usually won’t provide coverage if you tear off a side mirror while backing your work van out of a parking spot.

commercial auto can help you pay for:

Medical expenses
Collision repairs
Rental reimbursement
Workers' Compensation

Workers' Compensation

For business owners who hire employees
Workers’ compensation insurance can help pay for medical care and lost wages after a workplace injury. It’s almost always required if you have employees, and you might need coverage before you can get your daycare license. Choose business owner’s coverage with your policy to protect yourself.

workers compensation can help you pay for:

Medical expenses
Lost wages
Employer liability
Commercial Property

Commercial Property

For business owners who own or rent physical spaces
Commercial property insurance can help protect your business equipment, inventory and even the building itself if you own it. If your business property is damaged due to a covered event, such as a burst water pipe or fire, property insurance can help with replacement costs or repairs.

Daycare insurance requirements

Daycares are almost always required to have insurance due to the risk of injury to kids and property damage. You might need insurance to:

  • Get a daycare license in your state.
  • Start caring for children. Local governments might ask you to have active insurance — usually general liability or workers’ compensation.
  • Hire employees. Most states require workers’ compensation.
  • Drive for business purposes. Business-owned vehicles typically need commercial auto insurance.
  • Repair or replace property you own or rent. Protect your inventory, equipment and even the building that you lease or own.

Frequently asked questions about business insurance

Here are some of the most common questions we get about insurance for daycare centers. If you don’t find the answers you need here, our licensed, U.S.-based insurance advisors are standing by to help via online chat or phone.

How does business insurance protect daycares?

Our commercial and home daycare insurance packages are designed to protect your business from a variety of childcaring risks and help you save money to grow your business. You can be protected from financial losses related to:

Damage to someone’s property

A child kicks a ball in your outdoor play area and shatters a neighbor’s window. The general liability coverage in your insurance package could help pay for a replacement.

Accidents that hurt someone

A child chips a tooth when falling from your playground equipment. Your general daycare liability insurance coverage could also come into play here by helping to pay for medical costs and legal fees.

Professional mistakes

Your daycare accidentally serves a snack that contains an allergen and a child has to receive treatment. Professional liability insurance helps you defend yourself if you’re accused of making a mistake that causes someone to lose money.

Workplace injuries

An employee strains their back while picking up a toddler. Workers’ compensation insurance with business owner’s coverage can help cover medical bills and lost wages. Workers’ comp is usually required by law if you have employees.

Injuries and damage involving your business vehicles

Your work van’s roof is dented by a fallen branch during an overnight storm. Commercial auto insurance will help pay for the repairs. This coverage is also usually required by law for business-owned vehicles.

Damage to your own property

A frozen pipe bursts and floods your daycare facility. Commercial property insurance can help with replacement or repair costs if your owned or leased property is damaged due to a covered event, such as a burst water pipe, fire, tornado or vandalism.

Do I need to provide a childcare center provider license to get insurance?

No, ERGO NEXT does not require proof of a daycare provider license for insurance. You will not need your license number to sign up, but a background check will be required for coverage.

How many children can I care for at once with this childcare insurance policy?

The number of children you’re allowed to care for depends on your license status, the licensing requirements in your state and the provider you have. ERGO NEXT insurance policies for daycare provide coverage for up to 50 children with a maximum 25:1 child-to-care-provider ratio.

I provide overnight child care. Am I still eligible for a daycare insurance policy with ERGO NEXT?

ERGO NEXT does not offer insurance to providers who care for children overnight. Field trips and swimming pools are also not covered. Always be sure to check your policy for a full list of excluded activities.

What’s the maximum number of hours I can care for children per day?

ERGO NEXT daycare insurance policies provide coverage for up to 15 hours of childcare each day.

Do you provide coverage for commercial centers as well?

Unfortunately, at this time we are only able to offer insurance to in-home day care providers. This means that the child care provider must live in the home where child care services are being provided.

How long will it take to get my policy after I buy?

In case you purchase your policy online you will receive your policy documents via email within one business day of purchase. In case you purchase through an agent your agent will let you know when to expect your documents.

What kind of coverage could in-home daycare insurance or a commercial daycare center policy provide?

Our commercial and home daycare insurance packages are designed to protect your business from a variety of childcaring risks and financial losses related to:

Damage to someone else’s property

In your outdoor play area, a child kicks a ball through a neighbor’s window. The general liability coverage in your business insurance policy could help pay for the replacement.

Damages to your own daycare facilities or property

Here’s an example: A frozen pipe bursts and floods your facility, leaving a mess and damages to sleeping cots, art supplies, lots of toys and snacks. Commercial property insurance could help with costs.

Accidents that hurt a non-employee

Under your supervision, a child chips a tooth in your playground. Your daycare liability insurance coverage could help pay for medical costs and any resulting legal action against you.

Workplace injuries

An employee strains their back picking up a toddler. Workers’ compensation insurance could help cover medical bills and lost wages. Workers’ comp is usually required by law if you have employees.

What do I need to get an insurance quote online?

It takes about 10 minutes to get a business insurance quote online with ERGO NEXT. We’ll ask a few questions about your business — like what you do, your location, what type of events you sell at, how many people you employ and the vehicles you use for work. You’ll choose your options and see prices. If you like what you see, you can buy online and get a certificate of insurance (proof of insurance) on the spot.

How can I get a certificate of insurance (COI)?

Once you have a ERGO NEXT policy, you’ll have 24/7 access to proof of your insurance (also called a certificate of insurance, or COI) via web or app. Log in to your account, download your COI instantly or deliver it via email or text at no additional cost. Get unlimited certificates and add an additional insured as you need them.

How do you file an insurance claim with ERGO NEXT?

If you’re a policyholder, simply log in to your account and file a claim. We’ll contact you shortly to go over the details. Our support team is standing by to help.
