We are looking for an energetic Insurance Regulatory Counsel to join our small, scrappy legal department. This role will be tasked with counseling the business teams on insurance-focused regulations in all jurisdictions in the US as we develop our menu of insurance products and claims-handling processes. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience as a regulatory attorney and be able and/or willing to provide assistance with commercial contracts. This person will also be familiar with, or able to quickly learn, how the insurance industry operates, from underwriting through claims management, and assist in instituting best practices for teams in an international trio of locations.
Provide day-to-day direction, strategy, and legal advice to the business on insurance regulatory and compliance issues.
Draft and negotiate contracts with third-party partners in the insurance supply chain, including sales and marketing partners.
Develop, implement, and enforce company policies and compliance efforts, including best practices for record management and data retention, and customer outreach and engagement.
Manage regulatory filings and work to obtain new licenses, as needed.
Provide training for cross-functional teams to ensure goal alignment.
7+ years of experience at a reputable law firm and/or in-house legal department in the insurance industry
Know-how, self-sufficiency, and enthusiasm to research and locate answers to operational questions in a context that merges traditional insurance rules with online technology
Technology-embracing attitude as a tool to eliminate redundancies and provide superior service to customers
Outstanding analytical skills, business judgment, critical thinking, and ability to juggle numerous tasks in parallel
Team player mentality, including a willingness to play different roles depending on projects and current staffing needs
Preferred but not required: Experience interacting with state DOI regulators and/or performing compliance audits
