Backend Software Engineer
Next Insurance is a fast-growing 290+ person startup based in Silicon Valley and is led by a team of experienced entrepreneurs with a history of successful outcomes. Our mission is to transform insurance for small businesses by combining world-class technology and phenomenal customer service to offer better insurance at a lower price. Next has raised over $380 million from top tier investors and is the valley’s latest unicorn, valued at over $1 billion.
Next is well-positioned to become the leader in the $140 billion small business insurance market because we offer a 100% online experience that is tailored to unique business needs and we get customers insured in minutes - something no one else does. Despite the size of the market, the experience of buying small business insurance has not caught up with best practices instituted in other industries like banking, lending, and even personal lines insurance. There is still a lot of paper involved, purchasing a policy can take days or even weeks, and the coverage is so complex that it’s hard for entrepreneurs to understand what they are buying. We're here to change that. Our goal is to make insurance simple, affordable, and transparent for small businesses so they can stop worrying about insurance and focus on running their businesses.
Our Backend Software Engineer can expect to work with the latest backend technologies and programming languages. We're big fans of server-side Kotlin and produce clean, testable code fast and push it into production several times a day via our CI / CD pipeline.
You will work closely with other functional areas in the company - Product, Marketing and our Front-end engineers in order to rapidly iterate on our product and find the best solutions to the challenges we face. You will take ownership of features - from inception through design and coding, eventually bringing your feature to production at a high level of quality and test coverage.
We are looking for people who want to influence, build, learn and deliver exceptional software. Our ideal candidate loves to work in an agile fashion and release to production often, but also builds a great architecture and design to take the company years ahead.
Desired Skills and Experience:
4+ years of proven experience in a high-level OOP language, preferably in a JVM language
A profound understanding of design considerations (data structure choices, time vs. space tradeoffs)
Hands-on development of concurrent / distributed systems, preferably cloud-based
Strong SQL skills, preferably with MySQL
As enthusiastic about programming as we are
A team player with a positive spirit
B.S in computer science or equivalent
